Climate change is increasing the frequency of forest fires. Rapid actions to forest fires can be effectively prompted by satellites. This study used data from four sun-synchronous satellites and one geostationary satellite to detect and monitor a forest fire in Korea. The spatial, temporal, and spectral resolutions of the satellite data were compared. Due to its short swath and ability to estimate precise details on the fire only on a local scale, KOMPSAT-3A could only monitor the small-scale forest fire. Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 offered additional spectral bands and temporal information, which improved the accuracy of identifying the fire damage, and were suitable for local- and large-scale observations of the forest fire. The earliest detection of the forest fire and its duration was made possible by the GeoKompsat-2A, although their poor spatial resolutions restricted damage estimates to the local scale.
