Chia-Lin Yang1,2 (1.Kaohsiung Veterans General HospitalPhysical Medicine & Rehabilitation, 2.I-Shou UniversityDepartment of Healthcare Administration)

Background: Like many countries in the world, Taiwan's population is rapidly aging. Therefore, institutions such as nursing homes are needed to help families take care of the disabled, and occupational therapists are also needed to provide professional intervention in institutions. The purpose is to understand the status of occupational therapy provided by nursing homes in Kaohsiung area, family members' opinions on self-pay or health insurance, and their requirements on the frequency, program and quality of services provided.
Method: The nature of this article is qualitative research. Family members of nursing home residents in Kaohsiung area were invited to be interviewed based on intentional sampling. Cases were collected until the data were saturated. The interview was conducted with a semi-structured interview outline and the whole process was recorded. After the completion, it was typed into a verbatim draft. and following thematic analysis.
Result: A total of 11 family members were interviewed and found the following results: 1. The public is not very clear about the difference between occupational therapy and other rehabilitation specialties. 2. Whether to take self-pay therapy will consider whether there is potential for improvement. 3. The acceptable fee of self-pay is about NTD 2,000 to 4,000 per month. 4. Interacting with therapists during therapy sessions can also be effective to improve residents' mood. 5. It’s better to provide individualized treatment program in a one-to-one manner for self-pay treatment.
Conclusion: If nursing homes want to provide self-pay occupational therapy as a part of their service, they may need to highlight the professional value of occupational therapy, set a generally acceptable price, and provide individualized treatment program in a one-to-one manner.
