[MIS25-01] Heavy Rainfall Event in Middle Viet Nam on 8-9 December 2018 and current QPE/QPF at VNMHA
★Invited Papers
Keywords:heavy rainfall, JICA project, QPE/QPF, numerical weather prediction, Viet Nam
On 8-9 December 2018, a heavy rainfall event occurred in Middle Viet Nam, and at Da Nang, a record-breaking rainfall 635 mm was observed in 24 hours from 19 LST (12 UTC) 8 December. This heavy rainfall was relating to the strong cold surge from the north and eastern wind, a typical heavy rainfall situation in Viet Nam.
Since June 2018, a bilateral cooperative project between the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Viet Nam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration (VNMHA) for strengthening capacity in weather forecasting and flood early warning system in Viet Nam has been conducted. This project is relating to S-band radars that installed in Hai Phong (Phu Lien) and Vinh by another grant aid project in September 2017, and the Japan Meteorological Business Support Center (JMBSC) is contributing to four scopes of the project on surface meteorological observation, radar maintenance and products, weather forecasting, and regional weather dissemination.
In the presentation, we introduce the ongoing JICA project, and refer to the heavy rainfall event on 8-9 Decemebr 2018, and the quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) system based on automatic weather station (AWS) and radar networks and satellite data and the quantitative precipitation forecast (QPF) system based on numerical weather prediction (NWP) at VNMHA. Current and future subjects of the project on the two systems will be discussed.
Acknowledgments: The authors thank to JICA project team members including Kenji Akaeda, Michihiko Tonouchi, Masao Mikami, Kiichi-Sasaki, Hiroyuki Ichijo, Chiho Kimpara, and staff of VNMHA including Nguyen Vinh Thu, Nguyen Dang Quang, and Nguyen Thu Hang. Generation of the precipitation analysis map at VNMHA is partly supported by the national research project “Developing an operational heavy rainfall forecast system for Bac Bo area - Vietnam” (code KC.08.06/16-20; project manager Hoang Duc Cuong).
