[ACG38-01] Toward numerical modeling systems that seamlessly link coastal seas to open oceans

Keywords:ocean modeling, seamless modeling

Studies on the ocean have traditionally been separated into those on coastal seas and open oceans, and numerical modeling of the ocean has also developed separately. That is because the spatio-temporal scales are significantly different between these two targets. Recent advancement in observational technologies and computers, however, has led studies on open oceans to cover small scale phenomena such as submesoscales. Studies on coastal seas, on the other hand, have becoming to deal with not only individual bays but interactions between bays or with open oceans. Furthermore, the need is growing for such studies that synthetically deal with coastal seas and open oceans due to our awareness of the influence of global warming on human societies and the oceanic environmental problems caused by human activities. In this regard, we need numerical ocean modeling systems that seamlessly link coastal seas to open oceans. Development and application of such systems are attempted by many groups now, but there remain various problems to be solved because of the large difference between the spatio-temporal scales which control each of them. In this presentation, I would like to show my personal view on the objectives, requirements, and problems in “seamless ocean modeling systems”.
