Coastal ecosystems in the eastern Indian Ocean and its adjacent seas are in the center of coral triangle, the hot spot of marine diversity. The society in this region receives various ecosystem services, such as food supply, water quality regulation, cultural and spiritual services. The region is also the center of changing ocean influenced by anthropogenic activities. With development of industry and increase in population, demands on ecosystem services are increasing. The users of marine ecosystem, or stakeholders, are increasing which makes it difficult to build consensus for wise and sustainable use of marine ecosystems. Since scientific knowledge forms the basis for consensus building between different stakeholders, scientists are expected from society to prepare the best scientific knowledge on the structure and dynamics of marine ecosystems in appropriate timing. The scientific issues are, however, too big to solve by one country, and need international collaboration with exchanging scientists and transfer of marine science technology. Recognizing the situation, the United Nation declared the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). It is also pointed out that the importance of international collaboration since the marine ecosystems are connected each other and counter measures to prevent the destruction of marine ecosystems is to be driven under international collaboration scheme even each EEZ is under the control of national jurisdiction. In the presentation, we will discuss what issues are emerged in the coastal ecosystems in the eastern Indian Oceans and its adjacent seas and the direction of international collaboration as well as remaining issue to realize the collaboration.
