[AOS15-P07] Impact of sea surface variability of Yellow and Japan seas on the baiu season precipitation in the southern part of Kyushu, Japan

In this study, the effects of sea surface temperature (SST) variability around Japan on precipitation during the baiu season in southern part of Kyushu were investigated through statistical analysis using in-situ observation data, satellite- derived SST, and numerical experiments using a regional atmospheric model (WRF). The analysis of the in-situ observation demonstrated a statistically significant increasing trend of precipitation in the late-June over southern part of Kyushu, which was attributed to the increase in precipitation during 2010 -2016. The relationship between this increase and SST variability around Japan was also examined and found to be related to SST variability in the Yellow and Japan Seas. Furthermore, through numerical experiments using the WRF, it was shown that SST variability in the Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan modulate precipitation in southern part of Kyushu. This new finding suggests that the increase or decrease in precipitation in the southern part of Kyushu is caused by the SST change over the Yellow and Japan Seas. SST variability in the Yellow and Japan Seas play an important role in determining sea level pressure in the western North Pacific and changes the path and convergence area of water vapor inflow from the East China Sea to southern part of Kyushu.
