[HTT14-01] Development of GIS in Japan in connection with natural and social disasters

*Takashi Oguchi1 (1.Center for Spatial Information Science, The University of Tokyo)

Keywords:GIS, Disasters

GIS (geographic information systems) have developed to deal with various social issues. For instance, the inventor of GIS, Rodger Thomlison, intended to use GIS to support the development of rural areas in Canada. Economic requirements such as marketing also facilitated the propagation and applications of GIS in many countries. In Japan, the progress of GIS has been strongly related to the cases of natural and social disasters, especially those caused by earthquakes and gas explosions, which is unique compared to other countries. This presentation reviews the relationships between GIS development in Japan and disaster-related issues and states their implications.
