[PEM12-11] Lower thermopsheric winds from ICON/MIGHTI and comparison with the UA-ICON model

キーワード:Thermosphere, ICON/MIGHTI winds, UA-ICON model
Neutral winds in the lower thermosphere have a significant impact on the ionosphere. For example, the neutral winds drive dynamo electric fields and currents at E-region altitudes, which can affect plasma drifts and density distributions in the F region. Also, large vertical wind shear in the lower thermosphere is known as the cause of metallic ion layers, which can disrupt radio communication. The Michelson Interferometer for Global High-resolution Thermospheric Imaging (MIGHTI) instrument on the Ionospheric CONnections (ICON) mission measures Doppler shifts in airglow emissions from the thermosphere to derive neutral wind velocities. The latest version (v05) of the ICON/MIGHTI wind data is analyzed to reveal large-scale features of the lower-thermospheric winds (i.e., mean winds, tides, and planetary waves). The results are compared with the German whole atmosphere model, UA-ICON (Upper-Atmosphere extension of ICOsahedral Non-hydrostatic general circulation model), in order to highlight capabilities and limitations of the model.
