[S-SS07] Seismic wave propagation: Theory and Application

Tue. May 28, 2024 1:45 PM - 3:00 PM 304 (International Conference Hall, Makuhari Messe)

convener:Kaoru Sawazaki(National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience), Akiko Takeo(Earthquake Research Institutute, the University of Tokyo), Masafumi KATOU(JGI, Inc.), Kyosuke Okamoto(National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology), Chairperson:Shun Fukushima(University of Tokyo,Graduate school of Science, Department of Earth and Planetary Science), Nana Yoshimitsu(Kyoto University)

Seismic waves contain abundant information related to heterogeneous structure in the Earth and sources that excite vibrations. To appropriately interpret and utilize this rich information, diverse knowledge based on various approaches is required, including mathematical and numerical studies based on solid mechanics, fluid dynamics, and wave theory, experimental research using rock samples, and verification based on the analysis of observational data. Furthermore, with recent advancements in observational technology, a substantial amount of high-quality data has been accumulated not only for seismic waves but also for various wave phenomena, such as tsunamis, atmospheric pressure waves, and so on. Comprehensive understanding of these wave phenomena related to the solid Earth will lead to new research fields. In this session, focusing on the fields of seismology and geophysical exploration, we aim to deepen our comprehensive understanding of various wave phenomena related to the solid Earth. This includes theoretical and experimental research based on wave theory, quantitative research of the inner Earth structure using observational data, elucidation of various natural and social phenomena that excite vibrations in the Earth, and so on.
