[MGI27-06] FAIR Earth and environmental sciences: challenges and opportunities for improving FAIR principles across-domains. The experience of the FAIR-EASE project
キーワード:Open Science, FAIR principles, Earth system, EOSC
Earth and environmental sciences can benefit from integrated approaches exploiting large panels of data, from remote and in-situ observations, covering different earth associated aspects of heterogeneous nature, from geophysical to biological assets, from macro to even molecular information. All this is in support of multi-scale approaches to favour the understanding of complex processes addressing specific societal needs, like limiting the impact of the climate change, earth erosion, favouring sustainable and secure wellbeing and health quality, as well as preserving the biodiversity asset and ecosystems stability. However, although Earth systems are deeply interconnected, current efforts are still domain dependent, limiting the opportunity of holistic approaches exploiting integrated data resources. Bearing this in mind, the FAIR EArth Sciences & Environment services (FAIR-EASE) project, and EOSC (European Open Science Cloud) related project, aims to develop, customize and operate distributed and integrated services for observation and modelling of the Earth system, implemented in close cooperation with different scientific communities and research infrastructures to favour multidisciplinary approaches. The project focuses on some real-life science challenges, such as: 1) Earth and Environment dynamics; 2) Environmental Biogeochemical Assets; and 3) Biodiversity Observations. In this framework, several scientific communities address specific objectives while operating in an integrative technological environment, therefore enhancing the opportunity to overcome cultural silos, convey on methodological solutions, favour interoperability and facilitate trans-domain crosswalks. The involvement of different scientific communities represents a unique opportunity to characterise the diversity of practices as well as the FAIR maturity level in terms of awareness and resources deployed.
