[PEM12-P13] A regional three-dimensional model of the sporadic E layers: their formation and evolution process
キーワード:sporadic E layers, Numerical simulation
Ionospheric sporadic E (Es) layers are thin metallic ion (mainly Fe+, Mg+ and Ca+) layers that occasionally form in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region. They can cause reflection, scattering, and fading of radio signals due to the sharp vertical density gradient, which consequently affects positioning, communication, and navigation systems. The occurrence rate and vertical movements of Es layers have been widely studied. However, the three-dimensional structure and movements of Es layers have not been well understood. In present study, we develop a regional 3-D Es layer model driven by WACCM-X, which can describe the formation and 3-D evolution process of Es layer. By comparing simulation results with the ionosonde observations, this study suggests that the horizontal structure of Es layer may have a wide range and a tilted configuration. Furthermore, the Es layer not only exhibits horizontal drift but also displays geographical development and retrogression. The 3-D Es layer model is helpful for understanding the evolution of Es layer.
