[PEM17-P11] Contribution of Short Scale Electrostatic Structures to the Cross Shock Potential at the Quasi-perpendicular Terrestrial Bow Shock

Multi-spacecraft missions such as Cluster and MMS provide the opportunity to distinguish between the temporal and spatial features of boundaries such as the terrestrial bow shock and hence examine its structure in detail. In this study, we analyse the evolution of the cross-shock potential and the role it plays in particle dynamics. Results from ISEE led to the conclusion that that the cross-shock potential was created soley by macroscopic fields within the shock front. However, more recent Cluster and MMS observations indicate that short scale electrostatic structures may also play a significant role. In this report, we investigate the contribution and properties of small scale electrostatic structures to the cross-shock potential.
