Promotion of international exchange as a national academy representing Japan is one of the four important functions of the Science Council of Japan. The Science Council of Japan is a member of 42 major international scientific organizations as Japan's representative body. Twelve of these organizations (WCRP, SCOR, IGU, ICA, IUGG, IUGS, COSPAR, IASC, IMA, INQUA, SCAR, SCOSTEP) are related to the earth and planetary sciences, and the Subcommittee on International Cooperation in Earth and Planetary Sciences takes a role of coordination of these organizations, and coordination of the subcommittees corresponding to the international bodies. The purpose of the subcommittee is to comprehensively discuss and deliberate on the promotion of the wide range of international collaborative activities in which the Earth and Planetary Science Committee is involved. The members include the chairs of subcommittees corresponding to the twelve international bodies related the earth and planetary sciences, and the council members and the members of the Earth and Planetary Science Committee.
