It is still unclear what factors cause the spread of modern Japanese (youth language) used mainly by young people, and which words decline, or become established in the language community. In this study, we conducted a large-scale survey on the use and understanding of young people’s language and clarified its diachronic changes and synchronic characteristics. The analysis revealed that for several words (e.g., “shirankedo,” “ah-ne,” etc.), the influence of regional variants (dialects), which had not been pointed out in previous studies, was observed. In addition, the analysis of chronological differences identified words that tended to decline or disappear, and words whose use spread to older age groups.
