Plasmonic metamaterials, artificial materials composed of metallodielectric nanostructures, have introduced new degree of freedom to manipulate optical field from nano to macroscopic scale. There, not only near-field enhancement, but also far-field spectral responses can be engineered, thus offering an attractive platform for sensing applications. Here, we discuss our recent progress on high-sensitive surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) using plasmonic metamaterials, i.e., Fano-resonant metamaterials and metamaterial IR absorbers. The large spectral selectivity achieved by the Fano-resonant metamaterials significantly enhanced the spectral sensitivity in the SEIRA measurement. The low-background detection scheme based on the metamaterial infrared absorbers dramatically improved the signal-to-background ratio for better sensitivity. Our metamaterial approach achieves the attomole sensitivity in the far-field measurement, thus paving the way toward the high-sensitive analysis of molecular functional group in direct IR spectroscopy.
