Plasmonic nanoparticles in contact with semiconductor exhibit plasmon-induced charge separation (PICS) under visible and near infrared light (Tian and Tatsuma, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2005). PICS is based on carrier transfer from plasmonic nanoparticles to semiconductor due to external photoelectric effect, hot carrier injection, or interfacial electron transition. We observed electron injection from a single Au nanoplate to Nb-doped TiO2 in contact, by means of Kelvin probe force microscopy (KFM). We also investigated the cathodic and anodic potentials for PICS. In addition, we applied PICS to wet or solid-state photovoltaics and photocatalysis. Recently many research groups work on PICS-based photovoltaic and related devices and photocatalysis including hydrogen generation from water. We also applied PICS to plasmon-based chemical and biosensors, soft photoactuators, multicolor photochromism, and photocontrol of nanoparticle shape. Site selective photoetching of Ag nanocubes is also possible.
