SmFeN system is a promising material for permanent magnets which could replace the present Nd2Fe14B magnet since it has a higher Curie temperature and similar magnetic properties without the involvement of heavy rare-earth elements. Epitaxial SmFe7 films were fabricated on a Ta buffered Al2O3 (0001) substrate by the magnetron sputtering method. SmFe7 films were nitrogenized by irradiation with nitrogen atoms, resulting in SmFe7Nx=1.3 films. The torque curves reveal that an axis of easy magnetization changes toward parallel to the (0001) plane from perpendicular after nitrogenation which is in contradiction to the case of Sm2Fe17.
