Keywords:spintronics, first-principles calculation, electric-field modulation of magnetic anisoropy

We theoretically explored the system exhibiting huge electric-field modulation of magnetic anisotropy by means of first-principles calculations. We focus on thin films composed of Co (or Fe) and 5d transition-metal bilayers to exploit the strong spin-orbit coupling of the 5d transition-metal elements. We discuss the origin of huge electric-field modulation of magnetic anisotropy in the system on the basis of the second-order perturbation theory with respect to the spin-orbit coupling.
