A room temperature gas sensor based on a QCM containing GO/TiO2 composite sensing layer was fabricated via a liquid phase deposition technique. The composites with different GO ratios were prepared and characterized using SEM, XRD, TEM, Raman spectroscopy and XPS. The obtained data revealed a dense formation of TiO2 on GO sheets. The preliminary results demonstrated that GO/TiO2 composite has a significantly enhanced response towards EtOH vapor compared to GO and TiO2 individually. A wide range of sensitivity was obtained for the composite functionalized QCM resonator for EtOH vapor. The ability to detect different vapors with regard to its properties were well observed upon exposure to acetone, toluene, acetonitrile, chloroform and ammonia gases. The UV spectra showed that the GO/TiO2 composites have a longer UV light absorption range. The conjoint effects of morphology, surface area, the elemental composition attributed to display better vapor sensing of GO/TiO2 composite under UV light illumination at room temperature. The present study suggests that the performance of the gas sensor can be enhanced to investigate the desorption steps of the adsorbed organic vapors with larger molecular structures.
