[18a-C310-6] Tip-Induced Control of Charge and Molecular Bonding of Oxygen Atoms on the Rutile TiO2 (110) Surface with Atomic Force Microscopy

In this presentation, we succeeded controlling the simple chemical reaction (bonding, dissociation) and charge manipulation for oxygen molecules on the titanium dioxide surface using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Here we found bonding two atoms can be controlled by manipulating two electrons and the charge state of individual oxygen atoms can be controlled by manipulating one electron. The density functional theory suggests that the antibonding orbital present in the oxygen molecule is largely involved in this mechanism. These results demonstrate that electron plays a very important role in bonding atoms. We anticipate that our approach will prove useful for the investigation of the bond state and charge state for other of complex redox reactions and charging-related phenomena with subatomic resolution.
