High energy density, high power density, long cycling life as well as cost and environmental safety are the key parameters to be a concern in the development of energy storage devices. Supercapacitor lies between the capacitor and batteries, providing higher energy density than conventional capacitors, higher power density than batteries and long cycling-life. The use of nanomaterials is one of the most promising ways to develop superior energy storage device. The large surface area-to-volume ratio of quantum dot (QD) assemblies will enable us to obtain significantly large capacitance in EDLCs. We demonstrate high areal capacitance in the electric-double-layer supercapacitor of very thin (<100 nm) QD assembly thin-films. Formations of mesoscopic assemblies of QDs and the implications towards charge carrier accumulation as well as the potential exploitations of quantum capacitance for supercapacitors will be discussed.
