Photothermal heating with metallic nanostructures can have a unique property of being able to generate heat in the nanoscale owing to the plasmon resonances. In the current work, the heat transfer of the anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) coated with 80-nm thick plasmonic titanium nitride (TiN) was experimentally and numerically studied where the TiN photothermally generated heat. Higher optical absorptance and photothermal heating were observed from samples with bigger pore sizes and higher porosity. The numerical heat transfer analyses using effective thermal conductivities for the AAO-TiN had a reasonable agreement with the experiments, indicating the validity of the effective thermal conductivities which took into account the periodic nature. The current results can be extended to design other optically absorbing periodic structures for photothermal heating applications.
