There are growing expectations for water-splitting semiconductor photocatalyst materials that can produce hydrogen using solar energy. In this paper, we report the influence of the electronic state on the hydrogen production activity of a water-splitting semiconductor photocatalyst device structure by single-particle spectroscopic analysis using a synchrotron radiation soft x-ray scanning electron microscope, 3D nanoESCA. It was found that the change in the electronic state, i.e., the decrease in n-type nature, is related to the enhancement of the hydrogen production reaction activity.
