[II-JCKAP1-3] Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death: Stepping forward to next generation

Mi Kyoung Song (The department of Pediatrics, Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul)

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) in a young person is a rare event. The estimated incidence of pediatric SCD ranges from 0.6 to 6.2 per 100,000 children. Most Pediatric patients with SCD have underlying diseases, such as channelopathies, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease, and congenital heart disease. With rapidly evolving molecular genetic testing technology, a variety of genetic channelopathies and cardiomyopathies have been uncovered. Prevention of SCD is disease-specific. That includes lifestyle modification such as avoidance of competitive sports, attention to hydration, heart failure and antiarrhythmic medication, and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator placement. It is also important to educate patients and their parents about the patient's diagnosis and the specific risks of SCD and do the shared decision-making for exercise participation and device implantation.
