[1Fp08] Adsorption and reaction of methanol on Cu(977) and Pd/Cu(977) surfaces
In this study, we investigated the surface reaction of methanol on the Cu(977) and Pd/Cu(977) surfaces, using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). We observe three desorption maxima of methanol on Cu(977), associated with multilayer, terrace, and step sites. Furthermore, the presence of Pd on Cu(977) remarkably enhances the desorption of formaldehyde, resulting from methoxy decomposition. Our findings highlight the role of Pd in lowering the activation barrier for methanol and methoxy decomposition. In addition, the present results show the selective decomposition of methoxy species into formaldehyde and hydrogen. Further discussions will focus on the intermediate species of methanol dissociation through IRAS measurements.
