A lesion or disease in the somatosensory system might cause chronic pain. Its typical symptoms are increased pain from a stimulus that normally provokes pain (hyperalgesia) or pain due to a stimulus that does not normally painful (allodynia). However, mechanisms underlying such pain sensitization are largely unknown. In this symposium, researchers who have investigated the structural and molecular changes linked to chronic pain and its recovery will show the latest, interesting data from their studies using cutting edge technologies including in vivo brain imaging, circuits mapping, and cell-type/circuits-specific manipulations, and will also discuss the perspectives for the development of new analgesics.
