The lecture of Prof. Galaburda is going to be followed by this symposium. The theme of the symposium is developmental dyslexia(DD)in Japanese orthography. In order to understand and cope with children with DD, how can we make good use of rich knowledge foundation in foreign languages? Is it right to put those findings strait to practical use in Japanese children? Everybody knows Japanese language and its orthography is far different from alphabetical ones, and it is reasonable to assume some differences in brain functions of reading and writing. What we know about this issue now and should know in the future will be discussed.
