[Tu.4.A] Challenge for Risk-Informed Performance-Based Seismic Design

2024年3月5日(火) 16:05 〜 17:45 315 (Conference Center 3F)

Chair:Yasuki Ohtori(Tokyo City University)
Co-Chair:Nilesh Chokshi(NCChokshi Consulting)

Organizer: Yasuki Ohtori (Tokyo City University)
Co-organizer: Toshiaki Sakai (Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry)
Aim and Scope for Special Session: In the field of nuclear engineering, seismic design has always been one of the most important issues. However, with the accumulation of results from seismic Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA), it has become increasingly evident that the traditional seismic design approach may not be the most optimal. Issues related to rationality, particularly in terms of quantifying safety assurance and achieving a balanced cost-benefit ratio, have come to the forefront. The primary goal of this special session is to discuss the innovative approach of RI-PB (Risk Informed Performance Based) in seismic design. RI-PB offers a promising avenue to incorporate the insights gained from seismic PRA into practical design methodologies. It represents a paradigm shift towards a more informed and risk-aware approach to reactor design. In this session, we aim to reach a mutual understanding of the RI-PB framework and its application in seismic design.
The proposed session will feature discussions on the development and implementation of RI-
PB methodologies specifically tailored to seismic design. Key aspects to be covered include:
(1) Quantitative Risk-Informed Seismic Design: We will explore the incorporation of quantitative risk information into the seismic design process and how it can inform decision-making.
(2) Current Status and Case Studies: Participants will share insights into the ongoing research and developments in RI-PB seismic design from various organizations and research institutes. Case studies and practical applications will be presented.
(3)Challenges and Future Prospects: We will engage in a thoughtful dialogue about the challeng-es encountered in current seismic design practices and how RI-PB can address them. Addi-tionally, we will discuss the potential future developments and enhancements in RI-PB design.
(4)Issues to Be Resolved: An open discussion will be held to identify and prioritize the critical issues that need to be addressed to further advance the adoption of RI-PB in seismic design. With the objective of promoting collaboration and the sharing the of expertise among experts and practitioners in the field, this special session aims to contribute to the ongoing efforts to enhance the safety and efficiency of nuclear reactor designs.
