Ceramics and cemented carbides are commonly fabricated by the process of powder compaction, drying/degreasing, and sintering. Microstructures and properties of these materials are influenced by many conditions in the process. The interaction between the microstructures and conditions is extremely complex, and it is difficult to understand through experiment alone. Recently, computer simulations for hard materials have been developing, so the combination of experimental and computational studies is very important. In this presentation, the recent activities of material design for microstructure and properties of hard materials in Matsubara group are introduced. The computational works have been performed by using Monte Carlo method, FEM, DEM, and phase diagram calculation. The computer simulations that have been supported by experimental results is very useful for microstructural design of the hard materials. More helpful material design and more scientific understanding for the hard materials will be expected in near future.
