Cu–Zn alloy has long been used as cast and wrought copper product because it is inexpensive compared to other Cu–based materials and has excellent workability. However, Cu–Zn alloy has the problem of Zn evaporation at high temperature and it is not as widely used in powder metallurgy as it is in casting. Recently, few basic studies on the sinterability have been also reported. In this study, we investigated the effect of various sintering conditions on the sinterability of Cu–Zn alloy powders. As the amount of H2 in the sintering atmosphere increased, sintering behavior improved and weight loss due to Zn evaporation increased. The decrease of Zn content was especially noticeable at the sample surface and in the Zn rich phase. In addition, it is suggested that the Zn partial pressure around the sample contributes to the sinterability and weight loss.
