In the ultimate manufacturing fields, an increase of mechanical properties for components often requires surface modification. The laser cladding method as one of the overlay welding processes, is employed to improve corrosion, oxidation, and wear resistance in surface-modified components. Especially, tungsten carbide powder has been used for clad steel alloys such as blade, screw, and bearing to impart abrasion resistance. The clad steel alloy, incorporating tungsten carbide, forms a structure with a eutectic phase in an interlayer between the clad layer and the base metal. The behavior of the eutectic phase, after heat treatment, was examined through microstructure analysis. The heat-treated clad alloy was evaluated for mechanical property through hardness analysis. Conclusively, effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical characteristics for the clad steel alloy with tungsten carbide was confirmed.
