In soft magnetic composites (SMCs), the insulating coating on the particle surface reduces interparticle eddy current loss and core loss. Optimization of its composition and thickness has been widely studied. However, there are few papers evaluating the variation in coating thickness during manufacturing. In this study, we simulated the variation in coating thickness that might occurs during mass production and investigated the effect of variation in the thickness of the insulating coating on the core characteristics. As a result of the investigation, we confirmed that the effect on motor efficiency and torque are minimum even when particles without coating occupy 25% of the core, or when particles with half the coating thickness occupy 50% of the core. Compared to these, the variation in the insulating coating of commercially available SMCs is thought to be small, and the insulating coating of SMCs can be said to be excellent in robustness.
