[15E-T16-14] Prototype Evaluation of Axial Gap Motor with Soft Magnetic Composite Cores

Axial gap motors are known as higher torque density motors than conventional radial gap motors, which is advantageous for motor downsizing. Soft Magnetic Composite (SMC) cores are expected to be a suitable magnetic core material for axial gap motors because it has three-dimensionally isotropic magnetic properties, which are one of the important characteristics for axial gap motor cores. In this study, a prototype axial gap SMC core motor that can reduce motor height by approximately 50% compared with a conventional radial gap model motor was designed by electromagnetic field analysis. The designed axial gap motor was made of our newly developed powder, and maximum efficiency of the motor was 4% higher than that of the radial gap model motor. It was concluded that the new motor design using the developed powder can contribute to downsizing and improving efficiency of motors.
