Titanium-zirconia bonded materials have been developed as biomaterials having an superior hardness, excellent wear resistance and mechanical properties. However, it is necessary to suppress an occurrence of voids by elemental diffusion at the bonding interface, known as Kirkendall effect. The purpose of this study is to investigate an effect of oxidation treatment on suppressing elemental diffusion at interface between pure titanium and ZrO2. Pure titanium/zirconia sintered bonding were prepared by spark plasma sintering process. Titanium surface was oxidized by supplying oxygen gas at a rate of 10 litre/min before sintering. Heating temperature and holding times for oxidation are at 800, 900, 1000°C with setting various times. This bonding interfacial microstructures were observed, and measured hardness in both the pressurized surface and interface. Oxidized titanium surface was analyzed by X-ray diffraction and element diffusion behavior was clarified by EDS analysis. The results showed that elemental diffusion at interface can be suppressed when oxidizing over 900°C in longer time.
