[16P-T14-04] Fabrication of the Liquid Phase Sintered Boron Carbides Composites

Boron Carbides materials possess attractive mechanical properties such as high hardness and wear resistance. However, boron carbide has a problem in sintering, especially in the boron-rich region, because of the low self-diffusion coefficient caused by the strong covalent bonding of boron.To improve the sinterability of boron carbides, we applied the liquid phase sintering using an eutectic reaction between B and 3d transition metals to promote the densification of boron carbide base materials. The boron carbide materials were prepared by powder metallurgy using the spark plasma sintering (SPS) method from amorphous B powder, C powder, and metal powders, Mn, Co, and Ni.Densification of the boron carbide materials was promoted through the metal additions, while the microstructure of the SPSed samples is largely different. We will discuss the effect of the metal addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of boron carbides.
