As the industrial and scientific communities move towards sustainable manufacturing and resource efficient consumption, the replacement of traditional cobalt and nickel-based binders, as well as tungsten carbide-based hardmetals becomes crucial to eliminate their carcinogenic effects, environmental hazards, and supply risk. In this study, the sintering behavior, microstructural evolution and phase transformations of “green” high-chromium corrosion resistant Ti(C,N)-FeCr cermet was evaluated. The phase diagram calculations (CALPHAD) were performed using ThermoCalc®. 70wt.% Ti(C,N), Fe and 26wt.% Cr powders were milled, pressed and sintered in a vacuum furnace. The samples were sintered at different temperatures to study the sintering behavior of the cermet. Scanning electron microscopy and high-temperature X-ray diffraction were used to analyze the microstructure and phase transformations during sintering. The results showed improvement of microstructural homogeneity with increasing sintering temperature, the formation of typical core/rim structure, complex carbides and iron based metallic phase.
