[16P-T6-05] Influence of Nb Addition on the Microstructure, Phase Transformation Behaviour and Shape Memory Effect of CuAlMn Alloy Fabricated by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

Various amount of Nb powder was added into the Cu-13.3Al-3.9Mn (wt%) alloy to prepare quaternary shape memory alloys (SMAs) by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). Microstructure, phase transformation behaviour and its underlying mechanisms were analyzed. Alloy’s functional properties were also characterized. Result shows that Nb content has significant effect on the microstructure, phase transition temperatures (TTs) and shape memory effect. Though microstructure of the alloy may be refined by addition of appropriate Nb content, the number of pores increased significantly. The formation of precipitates and grain boundaries need more energy to nucleate and growth, which result in a reduction of martensite transformation start temperature and wide thermal hysteresis. Sample with 1 at%Nb containing fine and small volume fraction precipitate shows the best recoverable strain.
