Introduction:
Recently, a visual disease patient, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), has been rapidly increasing. Therefore, worldwide bio-related engineers have devoted to solving the visual diseases by integrating of a neuron engineering and bio-electronic device, which has been considered as a practical remedy for the patient suffering in visual diseases. The retinal prosthesis has been developed in the past decade, e.g., Argus II [1]. Our laboratory has developed a retinal device implanted on a suprachoroidal trans-retina to stimulate localized retinal neurons to restore a visual perception electrically [2, 3]. We propose the hexagon-assembly retinal device with the chemical-derived iridium oxide electrodes to achieve biocompatibility and reduce the electrical stimulation threshold.
Device layout:
The device is comprised of a bio-ceramic substrate integrated with IrOx/Pt electrodes and parylene layer served as an encapsulation layer and flexible substrate. In Fig.1, the bio-ceramic substrates arrange in hexagonal conjunction to get a higher flexibility. Each ceramic unit is adopted a CMOS chip at the backside of ceramic substrates to precisely control an electrical signal to the electrodes.
Results:
The chemical-derived iridium oxide electrodes were using an Ir precursor, complexing agent, pH adjustor and oxidant to selectively deposited on the Pt electrodes of the bio-ceramic substrate, as shown in Fig. 2. The hexagon-assembly retinal prosthesis with the chemical-derived iridium oxide electrodes could be tremendously improved the stimulation efficiency and ensure the safety of the electrical stimulation.
