アクチノイドの代替元素である希土類元素と地圏中微生物の細胞外放出物(EPS)による結晶化プロセスを調べるため、水溶性セリウムとSaccharomyces cerevisiae由来のEPS間の反応を調べた。形成されたセリウムリン酸塩はラブドフェン構造をとり、結晶子サイズは無機リン酸塩と同様にpH, 飽和度が小さくなるほど大きくなった。EPS内の核酸中のリンも反応するほか、タンパク質も取り込まれることが判明した。
