The laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is used for the real-time, in situ and remote elemental analysis without any pretreatment. These advantages are available in elemental analysis involving a high-radiation field, such as the post-accident environment inside the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
Despite the wide application of LIBS to elemental analysis of gas and solid samples, it is difficult to use this method with liquid samples because splashes and ripples that form on the liquid prevent efficient detection of plasma emission in the ablation. However, LIBS using liquid jets would be the most cost-effective technique that is suitable for remote on-line analysis.
Zirconium (issued from zircaloy or fuel cladding) is among the major elements of the debris material. In this context, the present study focuses on this element determination in aqueous solutions.
