Keywords:metal borides, iron-base alloy, eutectic reaction

The compatibility between iron-base alloys and metal borides (HfB2 and so on) which were alternative materials for B4C was examined with thermal analysis (TG-DTA) in inert gas atmosphere using the mixed powders containing these materials. The metal borides also reacted with pure iron and SUS as well as B4C at the eutectic temperature of ca 1100 C. The reaction between B4C and the iron-based alloys proceeded and perfectly melted at 1400 C. On the other hand, HfB2 did not melt perfectly and its powder remained.
