The AP1000 plant is the pressurized water reactor adopting the passive safety concept relies on natural forces - gravity, natural circulation and compressed gases. In the event of a design-basis accident, the AP1000 plant is designed to achieve and maintain safe shutdown condition without operator action for the first 72 hours.
The passive core cooling system consists of a Passive Residual Heat Removal (PRHR) heat exchanger as a heat removal system, Core Makeup Tanks (CMTs) as a high pressure injection system and Automatic Depressurization System (ADS) and an In-containment Refueling Water Storage Tank (IRWST) as a low pressure injection system, which are all located inside the containment vessel.
The first units are nearly complete in China, and testing of these systems is now underway. This paper describes the CMTs test results as a part of the hot functional testing to compare with the models in the safety analysis codes to demonstrate margin in the safety analysis.
