Huge amount of SiO₂ exists around the canister of the Used Nuclear Fuel in the case of the direct disposal. It had been pointed out that the reflector effect of the SiO₂ is larger than that of the light water. Authors proposed and coordinated an international benchmark calculation in the Working Party on Nuclear Criticality Safety under the OECD/NEA Nuclear Science Committee in order to evaluate the reflector effect of SiO₂.
