Relative large amounts of radioactive Cs contaminated soils have been generated and accumulated in Japan since the Fukushima nuclear accident. Therefore, decontamination of these soils and their volume reduction become very urgent issues. Herein, Cs desorption from typical clay minerals is systematically investigated by hydrothermal treatment with various solutions. It was found that Cs desorption was significantly strengthened by extraction with multivalent cations at higher temperature. On the basis of XRD and SEM-EDX analysis, mechanism of enhanced Cs removal from clay minerals was clarified.
