[3E12] Chemical interaction between Sr compounds and Zircaloy

In the accident of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station, the release of Sr from fuel would be enhanced both by the formation of volatile SrCl2 and steam starvation condition, which can lead to Sr chemical reaction with Zircaloy (Zry) cladding. This study aimed at investigating basic aspects of the Sr-Zry chemical reaction by experiment and chemical equilibrium calculation. The first result indicated that formation of SrZrO3 could be limited in the case of SrCl2 formation.
