Keywords:Steam explosion, Retardent, Inoncondensable gas, Carbon dioxide, Molten tin drops

In order to prevent steam explosion from occurring, we developed a retardant by dissolving carbon dioxide into water. Dissolved carbon dioxide act as noncondensable gas in the steam layer to stabilize the steam film and then to prevent water from contacting hot liquid (e.g. molten metals). The molten-tin jet was injected into water to quantify the critical concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide.
