[1H08] Social Aspects of Tritium Water Problems at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant

*Tetsuo Sawada1 (1. Tokyo Tech.)

Keywords: Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, Tritium contaminated water, Harmful rumor, Health effects of tritium, Organically Bound Tritium

Contaminated water containing tritium is already stored in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in excess of 1 million tons. Although it is possible from a scientific and engineering standpoint to tritium-contaminated water to be diluted according to international conventions and standards and released to the environment (ocean, atmosphere), there is a reality that it has not been possible. We analyze and discuss the social aspects of the tritiated water problem, with the total amount of tritium in the environment, constant emissions from nuclear facilities, and the biological effects of tritium as keys.
