Purpose: Archeological application of PIXE has a risk of damaging precious cultural heritage samples. We thus tested a low-dose proton-induced XRF (PIXRF) setup, in which proton-induced monochromatic X-rays from a metal target were used for excitation.
Method: To simulate historic blue paintings, we prepared a Co-containing gelatin sample. Cu Kalpha X-rays (8.0 keV) induced by 2.5-MeV protons were used to efficiently excite the K absorption edge of Co (7.7 keV). The same sample was measured also by PIXE with 2.5-MeV protons for comparison.
Conclusion: From the measured X-ray spectra, we found that when the limits of detection of both the techniques are equal, the dose by PIXRF is about 10-4 lower than that by PIXE.
