A framework related to Risk-Informed and Performance-Based (RI-PB) seismic design is presented. Importance and significance of RI-PB design have been discussed recently so as to accomplish a reasonable design and to also obtain a balanced risk profile for nuclear safety based on defense-in-depth consideration. However, specific and practical design procedure founded upon RI-PB has not been applied to actual nuclear facilities. Authors have been developing a new design framework based on RI-PB which considers not only failure probability of specific Structure, System and Component (SSC) but also considers system redundancy and diversity for seismic events in order to achieve a more realistic design as a total system.
