Keywords:Synthesis of Inorganic Materials, Cs Immobilization

Because of Tokyo Electric Power Company Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in 2011, radioactive Cesium (Cs) was discharged to the atmosphere. Cs immobilization method for long term storage are being studied. In this study, I choose apatite structure for immobilization materials for Cs. Apatites confirm to general formula M14M26(ZO4)6X2, where M1 & M2 includes larger mono-, di-, and trivalent cations, Z are metalloids, and X represents halides and anion radicals. Apatite structure is relatively stable under irradiation. We synthesized novel apatite structure materials containing simulated radioactive Cs with strontium (Sr) and aluminum (Al) by conventional solid state reaction at relatively low temperature of 500℃. Product quality was verified by electron microscopy and chemical analysis. Chemical analysis found Cs/Sr ratios as expected with almost all Cs retained in the apatite products.
